Workshops/Speaking Engagements

As a working writer, I’m delighted to present workshops, participate in panels, and deliver keynotes on topics such as craft, the publication process, and the creative life. Some topics I’ve presented in the past include:

  • It’s Time to Talk: YA Literature in Conversation with the #MeToo Movement
  • Building Strong Characters–and Important Voices–Across Genre
  • Leading the Charge: Using Fiction to Encourage Positive Social Engagement
  • Resurrecting Your Frankendraft
  • Hack Your Library: How to Use Free Library Resources at Every Stage of the Writing Process
  • Your Digital Audience: Historical Fiction that Resonates with a Twenty-First Century Audience

Some groups and organizations for whom I’ve presented:

  • National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)
  • Seattle Children’s Book Festival
  • Emerald City ComicCon
  • Pacific Northwest Library Association
  • Get Lit! Literary Festival
  • Puget Sound Council for the Review of Children’s Literature
  • Denver Children’s Festival of Stories

The best conferences and festivals incorporate a broad range of perspectives, backgrounds, and life experiences as they build and organize their events. While I appreciate every opportunity, I will only participate in panels that reflect the diversity of human experience. This means I won’t sit on all-white panels. Please be aware that I will ask for a list of fellow panelists, and I will be happy to make suggestions for replacement panelists whose perspectives would improve the discussion. Thank you for helping to deliver a richer, more inclusive experience to your audience and mine!

Speaking fees for appearances such as these vary due to a variety of factors. If you are interested in scheduling a workshop or speaking appearance, please email Sarah at How Now Booking ( sarah @ hownowbooking dot com) for more information.
