Classroom Author Visits

Thank you for your interest in scheduling an author visit at your school!

While my books are mainly aimed at upper-elementary, middle, and high school students, I’m comfortable with talking about the building blocks of writing (plot, character, conflict) with younger children, and I’m equally happy to discuss elements of craft with adults. Email Sarah at How Now Booking (sarah @ hownowbooking dot com) to get the ball rolling!

Presentations

Each presentation is an hour long (45 minutes of content, 15 minutes of Q&A). Length can be tailored up or down by around ten minutes in either direction to accommodate your school’s class periods. These are my most popular presentations:

  • Behind the Scenes of The Many Reflections of Miss Jane Deming – A presentation that centers the research process of this award-winning middle grade book, focusing on the nature of history as a narrative that requires multiple perspectives. Suitable for grades 4-8.
  • From Idea to Book – A lively interactive session describing the writing and publication process, with an emphasis on the importance of revision, perseverance, and empathy. Suitable for grades K-12.
  • Kids Take Over – This is a completely informal Q&A session in which the students prepare a series of questions on any topics they like and I’ll answer them. This style of presentation works best when students have read one or more of my books and have guidance from teachers and/or librarians on basic journalistic inquiry (who, what, when, where, why, and how). Suitable for grades 4+.

If you would like a presentation on a different topic, please contact me for arrangements and pricing.

I recognize that it is difficult for many teachers and librarians to get funds for author visits, so I’ll do my best to work with you.  Please visit my page on funding school visits for ideas and suggestions.
