Teachers & Librarians
I’d be delighted to talk to your class/book club/writing group about historical fiction, the publication process, being a debut author, writing in general, young adult fiction, medieval history, my book, or coffee. Especially coffee.
While my books are mainly aimed at middle and high school students, I’m comfortable with talking about the building blocks of writing (plot, character, conflict) with younger children, and I’m equally happy to talk shop with adults. My background is in librarianship and I worked my way through grad school as a TA, so I feel great in front of an audience.
Email me and we’ll work something out!
Honorarium
As much as I love visiting readers and writers, there are associated travel and opportunity costs involved, so I do charge an honorarium based primarily on distance.
* Within the Washington counties of Snohomish, King, Skagit, or Whatcom: $150
* Within the Washington counties of Pierce, Island, Chelan, Kitsap, or Thurston: $250
* Within any other Washington county: $300-$500
* Outside of Washington State: $500 plus airfare/gas money and lodging
* Anywhere: I’m available via Skype – please see my profile on Skype an Author for more information. I’m able to do virtual author visits for $60.
In-person visits include either a writing workshop or a presentation on a topic we mutually agree on, a Q & A session, and some time set aside for book signings. We can adjust the length of the session to fit your available time, up to two hours. Sessions work best with a maximum of 60 people.
Virtual author visits involve a presentation on a topic we mutually agree on or a Q & A session, and last between forty-five minutes and an hour.
I recognize that it is difficult for many teachers and librarians to get funds for author visits, so I’ll do my best to work with you. I also encourage you to approach your parent-teacher association for a small grant, or consider asking students to each contribute a small amount like they might for a field trip.
As a way of giving back, I do two author visits per year within Washington free of charge. Please contact me for availability.

History or Dystopian?
Can you guess which of the summaries are for recent YA dystopian or fantasy novels, and which are for actual historical events?
Secondary Worlds Readalikes
At times, the past reads like a secondary world. If you like dystopian or fantasy worlds, give historical fiction a try!
